This week I learned that if you are a married college student you could receive more federal funding to help pay for school. I thought this was interesting because I do not see how a marital status changes the amount of money you make, unless you combine both incomes, but in that case you would get less funding.

I encountered a situation this week that has left me thinking about how heavily important education is viewed by other people. I was visiting my boyfriend and one of his friends says, “How did a college girl like you, end up with a high school drop out like him?” I was a bit shocked that someone could just come out and say that, but it made me think about how people usually assume and expect people with degrees to end up with a person who also has a college degree. It seems as if this person completely ignored other characteristics such as, personality, work ethic, religious views, and other things that could possibly attract you to someone else.

Reactions and emotions about the election are still felt very strongly and are still prominent. I do not to voice any political opinion on social media, but I found an article on Facebook about Donald Trump that I liked, and decided to repost it. I have a friend who strongly dislikes him and because she saw my post, she unfriended me on Facebook and stopped talking to me. I thought it was very upsetting how political difference can cause such strong and drastic reactions, to the point where friendships and even marriages can end.

As I was having a conversation with my roommate, the common topic of race and skin color came up. She stated her opinion that she believes that it is more looked down on if a white woman date a black man than if a white man dates a Hispanic woman. She also stated that she believe that racism is not necessarily based on race, instead it is based on skin color.

This week while visiting my friend’s mom, she was asking me a lot of questions: what was I in school for, what did I have planned after school, and then an infamous question popped up: “Where are your parents from?” I have to repeat myself about 3 times, because she can’t quite catch what I was saying. I said both of my parents are from El Salvador. She felt a bit embarrassed because she didn’t know where it was and by her reaction, I doubt she has ever heard of it before. She was embarrassed and she felt as if she was being insensitive. I think because she is a white woman from rural Georgia, she felt as if she had to try her best to not say something that could possibly offend me.
